Two Dangerous Inmates Escape from Marondera Prison in Broad Daylight

Two high-risk prisoners escaped from St Thomas Prison in Marondera on Saturday afternoon, 2 August 2025, in what appears to be a bold and well-timed breakout.

How Two Dangerous Inmates Managed to Escape

The daring escape happened just after midday, shortly following a visit session with family and friends. According to insiders, the inmates—both from the notorious ‘D Class’ reserved for violent offenders—scaled the prison’s perimeter fence and vanished. The timing of the escape has raised serious suspicions, with some sources suggesting the possibility of an inside job.

One of the fugitives was reportedly jailed for armed robbery, while the other was serving time for rape. Their identities remain undisclosed.

A full-scale investigation is now underway to understand how the prisoners managed to flee under the watch of prison wardens. Critics say security was clearly lacking, especially given the high-risk nature of the inmates.

ZPCS Silent as Manhunt Begins

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has since launched a manhunt, but officials have yet to issue a public statement or appeal for help. Efforts to get a comment from ZPCS spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.

The escape has left Marondera residents rattled, with many taking to social media to warn each other in the absence of official communication. Panic is growing amid fears the fugitives could still be in the area.
