Western Cape Education Dept needs to act before there’s a crisis, says Patriotic Alliance

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) in the Western Cape said budget cuts in the education sector is a crisis that needs immediate attention.

The provincial education department announced a budget shortfall R3.8 billion over the next three years.

As a result the department said it has to cut more than 2,400 teaching posts from January next year.

The PA’s Bazil Petrus said if action is not taken, the impact on education will be evident in years to come.

“The Patriotic Alliance believes we must act swiftly to address this crisis. Therefore, we propose the following measures, that a multi-party committee appointed by the premier, engage with the national government to secure the necessary funding to restore teacher posts and prevent further job cuts.”
