ZESA Confirms 44-Day Hwange Unit 3 Shutdown For Maintenance
ZESA has announced that Hwange Unit 3 will be taken offline for 44 days, beginning on 10 September 2025 and ending on 24 October 2025. The utility says the unit will undergo statutory maintenance during this period.
Maintenance period confirmed
In a statement released on 10 September 2025, ZESA Holdings confirmed the shutdown of the unit, stressing that the work was necessary.
The power company said:
“ZESA Holdings wishes to inform its valued stakeholders that Hwange Unit 3 will undergo statutory maintenance from 10 September to 24 October 2025, a planned outage of 44 days. This exercise is essential to enhance the unit’s availability and reliability.”
The statement emphasised that despite the shutdown, four other units at Hwange Power Station would remain operational to keep supplying electricity.
“During this period, Hwange Power Station will maintain four units in operation to support generation,” the statement added.
Assurance of continued supply
ZESA sought to reassure the public that measures were in place to manage the situation.
The company explained:
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding and continued support. ZESA Holdings remains committed to improving supply reliability, and ensuring a sustainable energy future for all our customers.”
This development comes at a time when the national grid is under pressure, and many households and businesses continue to raise concerns over load-shedding.
Public response
The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some residents expressed worry that the shutdown could bring more blackouts, while others welcomed the maintenance as long overdue.
One Harare resident said:
“We understand machines need maintenance, but the timing is tough. We hope ZESA sticks to its dates.”
Another commented:
“If this helps in the long run, then it’s necessary. But we have to see real results.”
The utility has not directly issued further details on the expected impact on load-shedding during the shutdown.
