Zimbabwe Launches Initiative To Make Fuel Accessible In Remote Rural Areas

Zimbabwe has launched an initiative to make fuel more accessible in remote rural areas and also to reduce its cost in these areas.

The Zimbabwean government has approved new regulations for establishing low-cost, portable fuel retail stations in underserved communities. This initiative aligns with President Mnangagwa’s vision of inclusive growth that leaves no citizen behind.

The Energy and Power Development Ministry has gazetted new standards (Zimbabwe Standard No. 1119:2024) that create a regulatory framework for safe, container-based fuel distribution in rural zones. These modular stations will eliminate the need for residents and businesses to travel long distances for fuel supplies.

Energy Minister July Moyo announced the immediate implementation of these standards through the Petroleum Act.

“The adopted standards provide guidelines for constructing affordable yet secure fuel facilities in fuel-deficient regions,” stated the government notice.

This policy supports the Fuel Distribution Nodal System outlined in National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), aiming to improve rural access to petroleum products, reduce transportation costs for businesses, enhance agricultural productivity and stimulate local economic growth.

Opportunities for Entrepreneurs

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) can now process applications from companies interested in operating these containerised fuel stations. Approved locations will be determined in collaboration with local government authorities.

This development promises significant benefits for rural economies, including reduced fuel costs for transportation and agriculture, lower consumer prices as businesses save on logistics, increased profitability for farming operations and job creation in rural communities.
