A Zimbabwean demining expert died after an explosive device he was holding detonated in his hands.

Henry Martin Douglas Macharaga, a highly experienced Zimbabwean explosives clearance specialist, died after the tragic accident. The 52-year-old lost his life in a devastating incident in Argentina on August 19, when an explosive device he was handling unexpectedly detonated.

The fatal explosion occurred along Argentina’s National Route 34, a major highway system that connects numerous towns and extends to the Bolivian border. Local authorities and his employing organisation have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident that claimed Macharaga’s life.

Macharaga, who is from Chirumanzu in Zimbabwe’s Midlands province, was employed by The Development Initiative (TDI), an organisation specialising in mine clearance operations. With decades of experience in some of the world’s most perilous environments, his professional portfolio included extensive work across conflict and post-conflict regions, including Afghanistan, South Sudan, Angola, Mozambique, Lebanon, and multiple countries throughout Central and South America.

Colleagues and associates remembered Macharaga as a consummate professional whose courage and expertise contributed significantly to making dangerous areas safe for civilian populations.

Family Appeals for Support

Macharaga’s sudden passing has left his family both grief-stricken and facing practical challenges. His relatives have issued an urgent appeal to his employer for assistance with repatriating his remains to Zimbabwe and providing financial support for his surviving wife and two children.
