Zimbabweans have been barred from attending cruise ship job interviews in South Africa, just weeks after U.S.-based Princess Cruises suspended shore leave for Zimbabwean crew members. The move appears to be part of growing concerns over contract violations by Zimbabwean nationals working in the cruise industry.

A notice circulating online—shared by user @Annashy263 on X on Sunday, June 8—announced that Zimbabweans were no longer allowed to apply for cruise ship positions. The message cited “previous non-compliance with contract terms” as the reason for the ban. The ban reads:

“Unfortunately, applications from Zimbabwean citizens are currently not accepted due to previous non-compliance with contract terms.”

The poster advertised cruise ship job interviews for roles such as assistant waiters, snack attendants, housekeeping staff, cooks, and pastry chefs. The interviews are set to take place between June 6 and 10 at 32 Corgi Place, Midrand, Johannesburg. Applicants must have at least two years of experience and bring a printed CV. However, Zimbabwean nationals are now excluded from the process entirely.

Reacting to the news, @Annashy263 expressed frustration at fellow Zimbabweans for allegedly jeopardising opportunities through misconduct. The caption read:

“Pooping in the same well you drink from, what’s wrong with us Zimboz now look.”

The announcement sparked widespread debate among Zimbabweans online. Some sympathised with job seekers who follow the rules and are now unfairly affected. Others pointed fingers at a culture of cutting corners and dishonesty that has hurt the country’s reputation. A few tried to lighten the mood, offering Mozambican or Malawian passports to get around the ban.
