ZINWA Intensifies Nationwide Campaign Against Illegal Water Sellers

ZINWA is intensifying their nationwide campaign against illegal water sellers in a bid to stop bulk unlicensed water distributors.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide operation targeting unauthorised bulk water distributors, aiming to bring order to the water supply sector and protect community health standards.

This decisive move comes in response to growing concerns about uncontrolled water extraction and distribution practices in urban centres, activities that not only violate national statutes but also present significant health hazards to consumers.

Marjorie Munyonga, ZINWA’s Chief of Corporate Communications and Marketing, emphasised that the operation is being conducted by the legal provisions of Statutory Instrument 90 of 2013. This regulation explicitly oversees the permitting and operational standards for commercial water suppliers, including borehole operators and tanker truck services.

“Commercial water distributors must maintain proper registration with ZINWA to operate legally,” Munyonga stated. “Unauthorised extraction of groundwater in residential zones constitutes a serious offence unless expressly permitted by the relevant authorities.”

The water authority has also reinforced its quality control measures, with officials now authorised to conduct random sampling from both water sources and distribution vehicles to verify compliance with national safety standards.

Record-Keeping and Public Cooperation

Munyonga further clarified that licensed water providers have a legal responsibility to maintain precise documentation of all water extraction activities.

“We’re collaborating closely with police units and other regulatory bodies to ensure full enforcement,” she added.

The public is encouraged to report suspicious water distribution activities through ZINWA’s dedicated WhatsApp line at 0774 674 333, as the authority seeks to eliminate unauthorised operations that compromise water safety and regulatory standards.
