ZRP Disappointed As Junior Police Officers Plan To Demonstrate On Independence Day Over Shortage Of Uniforms

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has expressed concern over junior police officers complaining about shortages of uniforms.

The Issue In The Camps

Newsday reported that the junior police officers plan to protest during the 2024 Independence Day Parade to express their displeasure. The cops want to wear mismatched uniforms.

The publication added that last week, officers lined up for an inspection parade in preparation for the 2024 Independence Day Parade on Thursday, 18 April. At the parade, the junior cops were terribly dressed, with some donning civilian shoes. Police commanders in Harare allegedly ended up abandoning the parade over this.

A senior officer whispered to Newsday:

“The challenge of shortages of uniforms has been overlooked for long because the cops have been covering it up. They have been asking for uniform items such as shirts, skirts, belts and others from among themselves. On special inspections for State events, the one without a belt, shoes, or even trousers would ask another, and they would show up at the parade smartly dressed. But this time, they are singing a different tune. They are not borrowing. They are coming dressed in what they have, and it’s not looking good.”

ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi released a statement earlier, addressing the news of a planned protest by junior officers over uniforms.

He said:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern false information being peddled by some junior police officers on the availability of uniforms for the 2024 Independence Day Parades at National and Provincial levels. This is now causing alarm and despondency with some members using social media to drive certain agendas and, in the process, affect the effective performance of duties by police officers.”

Nyathi clarified that the ZRP has already given officers participating in the parades new uniforms:

“For the record, all police officers taking part in the 2024 Independence Day Parades at National and Provincial levels have been allocated new uniforms. The members will wear a specific dress code, which will be determined by Officer Commanding Police Provinces.”
