ZRP Identifies Seven Victims Killed In The Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway Accident

The ZRP has identified the seven victims who were killed in the recent Masvingo-Beitbridge highway accident.

The devastating collision on the notorious Masvingo-Beitbridge Road has left seven people dead, casting a pall of mourning over multiple communities. The catastrophic three-vehicle accident occurred on Friday, 12 September, at the 179-kilometre peg, with authorities working tirelessly to manage the aftermath and identify the victims.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the identities of six of the deceased, who their grieving relatives formally identified. The victims have been named as Leopold Mudiwakure (43), Fortune Eddington Chitsaka (21), and Sithembiso Bhegedhe, all from Waterfalls, Harare; Danson Chidewu, the driver of a Toyota Dyna truck from Unit J, Seke, Chitungwiza; Martin Mazhata (41) from Vembe Village, Chief Chaminuka, Gweru; and Takudzwa Masanganise (35) of Zowa Farm, Zvimba.

The police have confirmed that one man, a passenger in the Toyota Dyna, remains unidentified. His body is currently being held at the Masvingo Provincial Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination. The process of notifying all next of kin has been a delicate and sorrowful task for investigators.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, issued a heartfelt statement expressing the force’s profound sympathy. He said,

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” capturing the official grief felt by the nation.

A Stark Warning Issued

Commissioner Nyathi also issued a stern warning to all motorists, emphasising the non-negotiable importance of caution behind the wheel.

“We appeal to drivers to seriously consider road safety while travelling,” he urged.

This plea highlights ongoing concerns about the hazardous conditions on this vital transport corridor, a road frequently marred by accidents attributed to excessive speed and reckless driving.
