Celebrations erupted at Chipinge Prison after inmate Sarah Simango attended her daughter’s lobola ceremony under escort.

Simango is serving a four-year sentence for robbery. However, prison authorities allowed her to attend the family event.

The ceremony took place in Gaza Medium Suburb, Chipinge. Patience Sibiya married Tafadzwa Usore through traditional Ndau marriage rites.

Prison officers escorted Simango to the ceremony. She said the visit fulfilled an important family responsibility.

Speaking afterwards, Simango praised the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) for the gesture.

“I thought I would miss this day, and it would have become a pain in my heart forever. Being here today means everything to my daughter and me,” she said.

Ceremony Reflects Human Dignity

Meanwhile, Usore paid the bride price and presented groceries according to Ndau cultural traditions.

Chipinge Prison Rehabilitation Officer and Correctional Officer Grade One, McDonald Garapo, also attended the ceremony.

Garapo said the event reflected the organisation’s commitment to human dignity and rehabilitation.

“As an organisation, humanity is one of our core values. We commit ourselves to treating everyone with human dignity, and this event today, we are living up to our values,” he said.

After the ceremony, Simango returned to Chipinge Prison. The decision has since inspired hope among other inmates.
