Chivhu Crash Horror: 25 Dead After Kombi Collides With Haulage Truck
Twenty-five people have been killed in a horrific head-on collision involving a commuter omnibus and a haulage truck near Chivhu, with the kombi bursting into flames after the impact.
The fatal crash happened on Friday night, 28 August 2026, about 15km south of Chivhu along the Harare-Masvingo Highway.
The death toll has since been confirmed at 25, making the crash one of the deadliest road accidents reported in Zimbabwe in recent months.
Chivhu Crash Claims 25 Lives
Initial reports indicated that 21 people died at the scene, while others were taken to hospital for treatment.
The commuter omnibus caught fire following the collision.
Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs Minister Itayi Ndudzo confirmed the initial fatalities after the crash.
Witnesses described a devastating scene as the two vehicles collided on the major highway.
Authorities also said the commuter omnibus was overloaded at the time of the crash.
Survivors Hospitalised After Fiery Collision
Two survivors, including the haulage truck driver, were initially reported to be in critical condition and receiving medical treatment.
With the confirmed death toll now at 25, attention has turned to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police have launched an investigation to establish what caused the vehicles to collide head-on.
The identities of all the victims had not been released at the time of publication.
Police Investigate Deadly Harare-Masvingo Highway Crash
The crash happened as motorists and passengers travelled along one of Zimbabwe’s major highways.
Police are expected to examine the circumstances leading up to the collision, including the condition and loading of the vehicles.
As of Saturday, 29 August 2026, the investigation was still underway.
