3 ZCC Members Killed On Way To Mbungo Holy Shrine After Being Struck By Truck Which Veered Off Road
Three Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members travelling to the Mbungo Holy Shrine in Masvingo were struck and killed after a truck veered off the road and hit them while they were seated by the roadside along the Norton–Murombedzi Road on Saturday evening, police have confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred at around 7:30 pm on 28 March 2026 at the 54-kilometre peg between Norton and Murombedzi. The congregants had reportedly disembarked from a bus after it developed a mechanical fault during their spiritual journey.
What began as a pilgrimage quickly turned into tragedy.
Truck Veers Off Road And Hits Seated Congregants
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying four people were struck after a truck lost control.
Commissioner Nyathi said the victims had been seated by the roadside when the accident occurred.
“Three people died after being struck by a vehicle at the 54km peg along the Norton–Murombedzi Road on Saturday night. The victims had been seated by the roadside at around 7:30 pm on 28 March 2026 when a motorist driving a Tata truck towards Murombedzi lost control, veered off the road to the left and hit them.”
Two victims died instantly at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries after being hospitalised.
Commissioner Nyathi added:
“Two of the people died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries after being admitted to Father O’Hea Hospital in Kutama. The fourth person, along with the truck driver, is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.”
The injured victims were rushed to Father O’Hea Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were also taken for post-mortem examinations.
Bus Had Developed Mechanical Fault
Further details from Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera indicated that the congregants had disembarked after their bus developed a mechanical fault.
Inspector Kohwera explained that the truck driver attempted to avoid a stationary bus trailer before veering off the road.
“In a tragic turn of events, a Tata truck pulling a trailer approached the scene and attempted to avoid the stationary bus’s trailer that was partly encroaching onto the roadway.”
He added:
“In the process, the driver swerved to the left side of the road, where several passengers had gathered, and struck four people.”
Authorities confirmed that one of the injured victims survived while receiving treatment together with the truck driver.
Police Issue Warning Ahead Of Easter Traffic
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of the Easter holidays and school closing period.
Inspector Kohwera warned:
“Drivers must remain vigilant at all times. In the event of a breakdown, proper warning signs should be placed to alert other road users.”
He also urged vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
“Vehicle owners must also ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy to help prevent such tragic incidents.”
Investigations into the accident are ongoing. The identities of the deceased had not yet been released at the time of publication.
