Family Of Six Perishes Instantly In Horrific Easter Weekend Crash
Six members of the same family — a mother and her five children — perished in a horror road accident along the Harare–Masvingo Highway on Thursday, 2 April 2026, after their Toyota Corolla was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck at the 246-kilometre peg.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the fatal crash, which occurred on the morning of Friday, 2 April 2026, in what authorities described as a devastating accident at the start of the Easter travel period.
The tragedy wiped out an entire family in a single moment, sending shockwaves among travellers using one of Zimbabwe’s busiest highways.
Police Confirm Fatal Head-On Collision
In a statement posted on X on Thursday afternoon, 2 April 2026, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the accident.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred this morning at the 246 kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road. Six people were killed when a Toyota Corolla vehicle was involved in a head on collision with a truck. More details will be released in due course,” said the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Further details later revealed that the six victims were from the same family travelling from Harare to Zvishavane.
According to The Herald, the deceased were a mother and her five children who died at the scene of the accident.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the fatalities and said all occupants of the Toyota Corolla died instantly.
“All six people who were in the Toyota Corolla vehicle (mother and her five children) died on the spot and their bodies were taken to Masvingo Provincial Teaching Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem,” said Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Police said the names of the deceased would be released once their next of kin had been informed.
Driver Reportedly Lost Control
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle before encroaching into the opposite lane.
“The woman who was driving the Toyota Corolla lost control of her vehicle resulting in it encroaching into the opposite lane where it collided, head-on, with a haulage truck.”
Authorities confirmed that a culpable homicide case has since been opened as investigations into the fatal crash continue.
The accident occurred at the 246-kilometre peg along the Harare–Masvingo Highway, a major route linking Harare to Masvingo, Zvishavane and Beitbridge.
Easter Travel Period Begins In Tragedy
The fatal accident comes at the start of the Easter travel period, which traditionally sees increased traffic volumes across Zimbabwe’s highways.
Police indicated that more information would be released as investigations progress.
The bodies of the six family members were taken to Masvingo Provincial Teaching Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Authorities are expected to release further details once relatives of the deceased have been formally notified.
