Husband And New Wife In Killer Conspiracy To Murder Ex-Wife Over US$2,500 Child Maintenance
A Harare man allegedly conspired with his current wife to murder his ex-wife, in a calculated plot to avoid paying US$2,500 (approx. R47,500) in child maintenance arrears. The shocking conspiracy unfolded over two days, leading to a court appearance and a tragic suicide.
A Lethal Plot Over Child Support
Brian Chanachimwe (34) appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai yesterday, charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Jennifer Kalembo (35). The court heard that Chanachimwe did not act alone. Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu presented the case, stating Chanachimwe conspired with his present wife, Olipa Chide, and another man, Jonah Nekati, to kill Kalembo.
The alleged motive was specifically to escape the mounting child support obligation for his three children with the deceased. Prosecutor Jambawu told the court:
“The accused persons connived to murder the now deceased after the accused was being pursued to pay US$2 500 (approx. R47,500) child maintenance arrears for his three children with the deceased.”
A Fatal Ruse And A Body Dumped
The conspiracy moved into action on January 12. Chanachimwe reportedly lured Kalembo from her Mayambara home to his house in Pazza Crowhill, Borrowdale, by promising to give her US$150 (approx. R2,850) for their children’s school fees. Upon her arrival, the plan was executed.
Prosecutor Jambawu detailed the alleged attack:
“The now deceased was ambushed inside their house by the accused and Olipa Chide who strangled her until she died.”
The couple, together with their accomplice, then allegedly worked to conceal the crime. They disposed of Kalembo’s phone and burned her purse and ID. They hired a vehicle under false pretences and, with the help of Jonah Nekati, loaded Kalembo’s body into the boot around midnight. The trio then drove to a remote dirt road near Eyecourt and dumped her body.
A Discovery And A Suicide
The following day, January 13, a passerby named Samson Bhobho discovered Kalembo’s body. While Chanachimwe appeared in court yesterday, the conspiracy took another tragic turn. His alleged accomplice and current wife, Olipa Chide, reportedly committed suicide upon learning police were actively searching for her. The third accomplice, Jonah Nekati, remains at large.
Chanachimwe is set to return to court on February 4. Any application for bail must be made at the High Court.
