Wicknell Chivayo Buys a New Million-Dollar Private Jet

Wicknell Chivayo has spent about US$34 million on a long-range Gulfstream G550 private jet. The purchase adds to his reputation for flashy wealth displays.

Chivayo, 45, reportedly built his fortune through lucrative state-linked contracts. He revealed the purchase on social media. He also highlighted the aircraft’s high price.

Aircraft history and ownership

Flight tracking site FlightAware lists the jet under tail number N550GA. It was previously owned by Gulfstream Leasing, a US company. The aircraft first entered service in 2012.

Performance and cabin capacity

The Gulfstream G550 uses twin Rolls-Royce BR700 engines. It can fly about 12,500 kilometres without stopping. It can carry 14 to 19 passengers. It can cruise at up to 41,000 feet. It can reach speeds of 941 km/h.

Delivery plans and next steps

Chivayo has completed payment for the jet. However, aviation sources say upgrades will happen before delivery. The jet will undergo interior customisation. It may also be repainted. Delivery is expected in March.

Chivayo is a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Over the past year, he travelled using a Bombardier Challenger 300. It is unclear what happens to that aircraft next. The plan may change once the Gulfstream enters service.
