‘You can’t applaud mediocrity’: Former Kaizer Chiefs coach slams current team

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan criticised his former club despite recent victories. Amakhosi secured back-to-back 1–0 wins in domestic and continental competitions. They edged Golden Arrows midweek in the DStv Premiership. They then beat Zesco United away in the CAF Confederation Cup.

An early goal proved decisive in both matches. However, Khan remains unconvinced by Chiefs’ overall performances. He believes results alone should not define the club’s progress.

Concerns Over Style and Entertainment

Speaking on Soccer Beat, Khan criticised Kaizer Chiefs’ style of play. He described their football as uninspiring and lacking creativity. “Chiefs can’t afford to play football that’s just based on results,” Khan said.

“They need to play a brand of football that we can marvel at — a brand of football that tomorrow morning the guys in the taxis and trains are talking about, marvelling at Ace Ntsoeleng turning it on.” Khan believes supporters expect entertainment alongside victories. “For me, as a fan watching Chiefs, I want to see more. I want to see something that inspires me,” he added. He also stressed the importance of consistency and continuity.

Criticism of Opposition and Goals Scored

Khan felt Chiefs underperformed against Zesco United.
He compared the Zambian side to Motsepe Foundation Championship teams.
“You can’t applaud mediocrity. This is Kaizer Chiefs we’re talking about,” he said.
“When you look at the opponents they played today, they are not even better than some of our Motsepe League teams. I promise you, any team in the Motsepe League can go pound-for-pound with them.”
Furthermore, Khan questioned how Chiefs scored their goals.
“In the two games, Chiefs capitalised on poor defending,” Khan said.
“Against Arrows, there was an offside goal the referee didn’t see, and today we saw poor marking inside the box.”
