Man Jailed After Attacking Friend for Walking Too Slowly After Drinking Spree

A drinking session between two friends in Emakhandeni took a shocking turn after one man attacked the other for failing to keep pace while walking home.

The dispute, which unfolded in the late morning of December 3, 2025, left one man hospitalised and the other facing the full weight of the law.

Violence After Drinking Session

The court heard that the two men, who had been consuming alcohol together at a house in Emakhandeni, left the premises while still heavily intoxicated.

As they made their way home, one of them struggled to walk properly due to drunkenness.

That slow progress reportedly angered his companion, who lost patience and turned violent.

Weapons Used in Assault

Evidence presented in court showed that the attacker used a knobkerrie to strike his friend several times on different parts of the body before escalating the assault by striking him with an empty beer bottle.

The victim sustained facial injuries and was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Court Outcome and Sentence

The attacker, identified as 30-year-old Previous Nyathi, later appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Pasipanodya Maturure facing a charge of attempted murder. He told the court that alcohol had clouded his judgment and that he later realised his conduct was wrong.

Nyathi pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison, with two years suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within five years.

The remaining three years will be served effectively.
