In a viral video, a boarding master at Nemane Adventist High School spoke directly to his students. He urged them to rethink life after Form 4 exams. He warned against treating Johannesburg as the default destination. The message quickly sparked debate across social media.
The school is in Tsholotsho District, Matabeleland North. Many of the students he addressed are Ndebele. He challenged a belief that success means crossing into South Africa.
The boarding master challenges the “Johannesburg” mindset
The boarding master confronted a common dream among school leavers. He said many learners already plan to leave immediately. He asked them to question that assumption. “Another thing that you have learnt is that when you leave school you want to go where? … to Johannesburg,” he said.
He then warned that some choices can lead to harm. He described risky paths some youths consider after school. “What you are thinking as young boys is that once I am done writing Form 4 exams I will leave to Johannesburg and become Malayisha or a robber. You should start getting rid of that mindset,” he said in the clip, which has now been shared thousands of times.
Why moving without plans can backfire
He explained that Johannesburg is not as welcoming as many imagine. He stressed this is worse for those without qualifications. He warned that unprepared migrants can face joblessness and exploitation. They may also face deportation and return home empty-handed.
Education first, then better choices
He encouraged students to invest in education and self-development. He also urged them to build skills before making big moves. He warned against chasing the city’s “promise” without a plan. His message pushed learners to choose progress over pressure.
