Itumeleng Khune Slams Kaizer Chiefs for Missed Opportunity in CAF Confederation Cup

Itumeleng Khune Criticizes Kaizer Chiefs’ Approach After Narrow CAF Confederation Cup Win

Kaizer Chiefs former goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has expressed disappointment over his former club’s approach during their 2-1 CAF Confederation Cup Group D victory over Al Masry at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

While the win lifted Chiefs to the top of the group, Khune believes the team missed a key opportunity to secure early quarterfinal qualification.

Kaizer Chiefs Top Group but Miss Key Moment

The victory put Kaizer Chiefs in pole position, aided by ZESCO United’s 1-0 shock win over Zamalek in Ndola. However, leading 2-1, Chiefs needed a two-goal margin to secure quarterfinals before their final match in Cairo. The team failed to push for the crucial third goal as urgency dropped in the latter stages.

Coach Focuses on Positives

Head coach Khalil Ben Youssef downplayed the missed opportunity, highlighting the team’s good performance and spirit. Speaking to SABC Sport, he said:

It’s a good result but we have to think about ourselves. We have to prepare ourselves for the trip. It is a final game, we have to prepare to fight…Everyone is showing good spirit. There are very positive vibes inside.”

Khune Questions Tactical Communication

Khune, however, felt the team failed to “read the moment” and questioned whether the importance of goal difference was properly communicated to the players and coaching staff.

Very disappointing…The players should have been told that if we were to compare apples with apples, this is the juice you might get,” Khune said.
“They focused on themselves, yes, it’s very important to look at your own results and performance, but again, this table is too tight. They should have known better to say guys, let’s look at the comparisons in terms of goal difference.”

The former goalkeeper emphasized that clear communication could have changed the team’s approach, potentially securing early quarterfinal qualification.
