Former All Black Star Murray Mexted Lauds Springboks Captain Siya Kolisi
Former All Blacks star Murray Mexted has heaped praise on Siya Kolisi, describing him as a charismatic leader who has managed to bring unity to South Africa’s rugby scene.
Kolisi, who made history in 2018 as the first black captain of the Springboks, has since led the team to two Rugby World Cup victories — in 2019 and again in 2023.
Kolisi’s journey from a township in the Eastern Cape to lifting the Webb Ellis Cup has made him a global icon — not just in sport, but as a symbol of resilience and hope.
His leadership both on and off the field has been credited with inspiring a sense of togetherness in a nation still healing from its past.
“He’s the Perfect Man for the Job”: Murray Mexted Hails Siya Kolisi’s Leadership in Uniting Springboks
Speaking on DSPN with Martin Devlin, Mexted remarked on Kolisi’s unique ability to bring people together through sport.
“He’s charismatic, and charismatic leaders are normally successful — and he’s certainly that. He’s the perfect man for the job at the moment, particularly when you look at the complications within South Africa,” the former back-rower said.

“Rugby Is United, the Country Is Not”- Murray
Mexted, who recently returned from a visit to South Africa, said he was struck by the contrast between the unity displayed in the rugby world and the lingering divisions in broader society.
“I was there about 10 days ago, and I couldn’t believe the changes in the last few years. You can see the balance within the game of rugby compared to their society is poles apart. They are united in rugby, but they’re not united as a country,” he explained.
