Zimbabwe’s Sports and Recreation Commission has accused the ZIFA Normalisation Committee of delaying progress in local football reforms. The dispute relates to ongoing efforts to resolve problems that once led to a ban from FIFA competitions.
Zimbabwe previously missed international football for several months after governance issues triggered the suspension.
However, the SRC says progress towards long-term solutions has stalled. SRC director-general Eltah Nengomasha spoke to The Sunday Mail about the situation. He revealed that the ZIFA committee has not finalised a key memorandum of understanding.
SRC Says MoU Delay Slows Football Development
Nengomasha explained that the memorandum should create a roadmap for football development. However, the agreement remains unsigned months after the draft was completed.
“The MoU draft was done last year and it has been about five months now but the Normalisation Committee have never bothered to respond on the matter. Specific follow-ups have been made since then but to no avail.”
Because of the delay, tension between the SRC and the ZIFA committee continues to grow. Consequently, the situation may attract the attention of FIFA if the dispute escalates.
Stadium Commissioning Adds to SRC and ZIFA Tensions
Last month, SRC chairperson Gerald Mlotshwa criticised the ZIFA committee over a stadium ceremony. He accused officials of boycotting the commissioning of The Heart Stadium. The stadium belongs to businessman Walter Magaya.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened the facility in Waterfalls.
However, ZIFA committee chairman Lincoln Mutasa defended the organisation. He said they received notice of the event only two days before the ceremony.
