Former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena arrested in Algeria

The South African Embassy has confirmed efforts to support coach Rulani Mokwena. He was detained in Algiers on Monday.

According to SABC News, officials stopped him at Houari Boumediene Airport. Authorities allege he carried undeclared foreign currency while leaving Algeria.

Mokwena Secures Big Move to Libya

Meanwhile, Mokwena recently stepped down as MC Alger head coach. The 39-year-old now prepares to join Libyan giants Al Ittihad SC.

His new contract makes him one of Africa’s highest-paid coaches. Additionally, Al Ittihad signed his former player Thembinkosi Lorch.

Reports suggest Mokwena will bring South African technical staff. These include Themba Badela, who worked with him at previous clubs.

Al Ittihad’s Dominance and Next Steps

Al Ittihad currently leads the Libyan Premier League standings. The team remains unbeaten with nine wins and one draw.

The club recently parted ways with coach Khaled Ben Yahia. Now, they prepare for Mokwena’s expected arrival.

Founded in 1944, Al Ittihad holds 18 league titles. They dominated the 2000s with six consecutive championships.

The club also boasts seven Libyan Cups and eleven Super Cups. Furthermore, they reached CAF semi-finals in 2007 and 2010.

Officials will unveil Mokwena once authorities release him in Algeria.
