ZRP Warns Drivers as SADC Summit Descends on Harare

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to motorists as Zimbabwe prepares to host the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit.

The summit, scheduled for August 17, 2024, in Harare, will take place under the theme “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustained Economic Growth and Development Towards an Industrialised SADC.” With several regional Heads of State and their delegations already arriving ahead of the high-profile event, which will be held at the new Parliament building in Mount Hampden, the ZRP is emphasizing the importance of road safety.

In a statement released on Friday, the ZRP reminded drivers of their duty to adhere to road rules and regulations.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reminds motorists that there have the responsibility of observing and promoting road safety on the country’s roads. In this regard, as the nation hosts the 44th Ordinary Session of the SADC Heads of State and Government, the Police implores drivers to be patient on the roads, comply with all road rules and regulations in order to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country,” police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

Nyathi also issued a strong warning to those who might consider flouting traffic regulations, stating that the police would take swift action against any violations.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that arrest of errant drivers will be effected without fear or favour,” Nyathi added.

In addition, Nyathi encouraged the public to report any instances of reckless driving.

“The public should feel free to alert the Police on drivers who are reckless and dangerously driving on the roads through the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197,” Nyathi advised the public.
