Benni McCarthy Likens Kaizer Chiefs to Manchester United Amid Struggles
Former South African striker Benni McCarthy has drawn parallels between Kaizer Chiefs and English Premier League giants Manchester United, saying both clubs are well-structured, historically successful, and supported by passionate fan bases.
Speaking to iDiski Times, McCarthy said Kaizer Chiefs are “the most well-run, well-organised football club in this country,” adding that their setup mirrors what he experienced at Manchester United.

Trophy Drought and League Struggles
Despite breaking a 10-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup last season, Chiefs have struggled in league campaigns, finishing outside the top eight in the past two seasons. Currently, the club sits fifth on the Betway Premiership table with 33 points from 19 games.
McCarthy noted that, like Manchester United — who last won the Premier League in 2012 but have secured domestic trophies in recent seasons — Chiefs face similar challenges on the field despite having the right infrastructure off it.
Confidence Issues Among Players
According to McCarthy, the core problem lies with confidence and belief within the squad. He emphasized that coaching staff have a key role in restoring the players’ self-assurance and helping them rediscover what made them successful in the first place.
“Confidence is low within that football club, because if you lose four games on the bounce, then there’s a confidence issue. Players don’t become bad overnight. They need someone to restore the belief and the oomph that made them special,” McCarthy said.
Coaching and Strategy Are Key
The former striker highlighted that solving Chiefs’ coaching dilemma is critical. Whether the club maintains the current coaching team or appoints new staff, McCarthy insists the solution should focus on instilling belief and a winning mentality in the squad.
He concluded:
“Once they get that card right, then good luck to all the other teams. Chiefs have everything to be at the top — history, fans, structure — they just need to put it together on the pitch.”
