George Charamba Signals April Salary Review for Civil Servants

Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, George Charamba, has indicated that civil servants could see a salary review as early as next month. He urged patience as Government finalises measures to improve workers’ earnings and conditions.

Government Responds to Economic Pressures

Posting on his X account, George Charamba acknowledged the growing financial strain on public sector employees and assured that the government is working on interventions to ease the burden.

Charamba said Government is fully aware of the challenges facing its workforce, particularly as global developments continue to impact local prices.

He pointed to rising costs linked to international factors, including instability in the Middle East, which has contributed to increased fuel prices and, in turn, higher living expenses.

He said the long-anticipated review of wages and salaries is now imminent and is expected to be implemented by April.

PATIENCE, PATIENCE MACOMRADES: Good tidings are coming both on the fuel front and salaries for civil servants. Government is fully aware of the pressures its workforce faces, particularly in the wake of disturbances in the Middle East. A review of wages and salaries was due anyway; it is coming, certainly by this April!!!!!,” reads the post.

Protests Highlight Workers’ Frustrations

The announcement comes against a backdrop of growing discontent among health workers, with nurses recently staging a demonstration at Sally Mugabe Hospital.

Staff at the major referral hospital raised concerns over stagnant wages, arguing that their salaries no longer match the rising cost of living.

Fuel Price Hikes Add to Cost of Living Crisis

Recent increases in fuel prices have intensified pressure on workers, with petrol rising sharply and triggering a ripple effect on transport and food costs.

The surge has worsened already difficult economic conditions, prompting calls for urgent Government intervention to cushion civil servants.
