Prepaid Electricity Tokens Now Available Online As ZESA Restores Most Platforms After Nationwide System Failure

ZESA Restores Prepaid Electricity Tokens Online After Nationwide System Failure

Prepaid electricity tokens are now available online again after Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) confirmed that most third-party vending platforms have been restored following a nationwide system malfunction that began on Sunday, 22 March 2026.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) announced on 25 March 2026 that banks, mobile platforms, and retail point-of-sale systems are now largely operational after a technical interruption that disrupted electricity token purchases across the country.

In a statement dated 24 March 2026, ZETDC said:

“Please be advised that most third-party prepaid vending platforms, including banks and retail Point of Sale (POS) systems have been successfully restored. This follows a system interruption experienced on Sunday 22 March 2026, which affected all vending platforms outside ZETDC Banking Halls.”

The utility added that restoration work is still underway for remaining systems.

“Technical teams are currently in the final stages of restoring the remaining platforms.”

ZETDC also apologised to customers for the disruption.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused during this service interruption and thank you for your continued patience as we finalise the full restoration of all platforms.”

Nationwide Token Chaos After System Failure

The restoration comes after a nationwide outage announced on 23 March 2026 left thousands of households unable to purchase prepaid electricity tokens online.

Earlier, ZETDC had confirmed that all digital vending platforms were unavailable, including mobile money services, banking applications, and supermarket POS systems.

In a notice issued on 23 March 2026, the power utility said:

“The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) sincerely apologises to its valued customers for the current system outage affecting the prepaid vending platform.”

The company explained the extent of the disruption:

“Please be advised that all third-party vending platforms including mobile money platforms, banking apps, supermarket Point of Sale (POS) systems, and all online channels are currently unavailable for token purchases.”

The outage forced customers to seek alternative purchasing methods.

Customers Forced To Visit Physical Offices

During the disruption, ZETDC advised customers to visit physical banking halls to buy electricity tokens.

The utility stated:

“While our technical teams work tirelessly to restore full service, customers are advised that they can purchase electricity tokens by visiting their nearest ZETDC Banking Hall.”

The move resulted in increased demand at physical offices, particularly in high-density suburbs and busy urban centres.

Customers were also advised to contact ZETDC support lines for assistance during the outage.

“Further updates on the progress of the restoration will be shared regularly. The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.”

As of 25 March 2026, ZETDC confirmed that most platforms had been restored, with final system recoveries still underway.

The restoration means customers can once again purchase prepaid electricity tokens through banks, mobile money services, and retail outlets.

There was no official explanation provided regarding the cause of the system malfunction.
