Itumeleng Khune Raises Concern Over Declining Goalkeeping Standards in South Africa
Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has expressed concern over what he describes as a decline in the quality of goalkeeping in South Africa, urging renewed efforts to improve development structures.
The veteran shot-stopper, who has been without a club since parting ways with Chiefs in June 2024, said he has been closely observing the game from the sidelines and believes urgent intervention is needed.

Lack of Coaches and Opportunities Highlighted
Speaking in an interview with iDiski Times, Khune pointed to a shortage of specialised goalkeeper coaches as a major factor behind the drop in standards.
He noted that limited opportunities for emerging goalkeepers to receive proper training and exposure have also contributed to the situation.
Khune said the gap in coaching expertise has made it difficult for young goalkeepers to reach their full potential, resulting in a noticeable dip in overall performance levels.
“The standard of goalkeeping has dropped. That’s because we have a lack of goalkeeper coaches in the country,” he said.
Academy Initiative Aims to Bridge the Gap
In response to the challenges, the 38-year-old revealed that he is working to make a difference through his Distribution 101 Goalkeeping Academy.
The initiative is aimed at nurturing talent while also creating opportunities for aspiring goalkeeper coaches who may not yet have formal recognition.
Itu Khune expressed hope that the project will help elevate standards by providing structured training and opening pathways for both players and coaches.
Call for Collective Effort
Khune believes improving goalkeeping standards will require a collective effort, including investment in coaching and greater support for grassroots development.
He remains optimistic that with the right structures in place, South African goalkeeping can return to its former strength.
