The community of Tylden, outside Komani in the Eastern Cape, is in shock after two men, aged 22 and 32, were arrested for house robbery and the rape of a 91-year-old gogo.
The incident occurred inside gogo’s home on Friday, 16 August, around 10 pm.
The two suspects were arrested on Monday, 19 August, in Tylden.
A resident, Ntuthuzelo Jeki expressed deep shock and said the elderly don’t deserve to go through such an ordeal.
“The area is no longer safe for the young and old. The use of drugs has a huge impact on rape and crime incidents in our community,” said Ntuthuzelo.
Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said police managed to track down the suspects and brought them to book.
“An elderly woman was at her home in Tylden. Two unknown males forcefully entered the house and assaulted and raped her. During the incident, they took her cellphone and TV and left the scene,” she said.
Mdleleni said a thorough investigation led to the arrest of the two suspects.
“Police also recovered the stolen TV, but the cellphone is still missing. However, police investigation continues.
“The duo is charged for rape, house robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH),” she said.
The Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major-General Rudolph Adolph, sent a strong message to criminals, stating that police will ensure the safety of elderly citizens.
“We’ll leave no stone unturned to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted,” he said.
The case was initially scheduled for court on Tuesday, 20 August. However, it was rescheduled as police were busy collecting more evidence.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luxolo Tyali said the two suspects will appear in court on Wednesday, 21 August.
