Chiefs add sixth foreigner to squad for coming season

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of the Angolan international Ignacio Miguel, who has penned a three-year contract, it was announced on Wednesday. Miguel is the third player to move to the Betway Premiership from Angolan champions Petro Atletico, following the move of midfielder Carlinhos to Cape Town City and winger Gilberto to Orlando Pirates. Inacio Miguel was born in Portugal and began his career there, moving on to short stints at clubs in Romania and Latvia. Two seasons ago he moved to Petro.

By then, he had already won a first cap for Angola, which came in 2020 in the World Cup qualifiers for the 2022 finals in Qatar. He has a total of five caps but his last international was one year ago and he was not picked for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in the Ivory Coast at the start of the year, where Angola reached the quarterfinals.

The signing of Ignacio Miguel means there are now six foreigners on the books at Chiefs, one more than allowed by the Premier Soccer League.

Already on Chiefs’ books are the goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari from Burundi, who moved from TS Galaxy last month; Botswana captain Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Mozambican defender Edmilson, the Venezuela international Edson Castillo and DR Congo winger Christian Sailie.

One of them will have to be de-registered to allow Ignacio Miguel to play. Uruguayan-born Gaston Sirino, who has joined from champions Mamelodi Sundowns, is now counted as a local after gaining South African citizenship.
