The Riverlands community wants immediate action to be taken against the owners of the four retention dams that collapsed and destroyed over fifty households in August.
The call followed the release of the Department of Water and Sanitation report, pointing at the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform as the registered owner of the dams.
The report further revealed that the dams had been built illegally, as no licence had been issued for their construction.
Riverlands Community Leader Marlon Truter, however, believes that the report is shielding the Swartland Municipality from blame, as municipal officials had been aware of the safety risk, long before the collapse.
“They knew about the dams. Swartland Municipality also is to blame because if you knew about a specific dam and you had to check up then if the dam was registered, why do you not do that?”
