Pitso Mosimane Breaks Silence On Potential Bafana Bafana Return As SAFA Eyes Succession Plan
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that he has been approached by the South African Football Association (SAFA) as part of discussions around the future of the national team.
With Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos nearing the end of his contract, speculation has increased over who could take charge of the team in the next phase.
Mosimane confirmed that he is among several coaches who have held talks with SAFA as the federation considers a long-term succession plan.

SAFA Discusses Future Plans With Coaches
Speaking at the launch of his Youth Football Coaching Manual in Johannesburg, Mosimane said the discussions were not necessarily about immediately replacing Broos but focused on planning for the future.
The 61-year-old explained that SAFA had engaged several coaches to understand their vision and approach for taking Bafana Bafana forward.
“I know that the federation has spoken to a lot of us about somebody to come in [with a] succession plan,” Mosimane said.
He added that the discussions centred on important questions about the team’s direction.
“What you want? What you going to do? What’s your plan? How do we take Bafana to a better level?” he said.
Mosimane Says Bafana Can Achieve More
While acknowledging the progress made under Broos, Mosimane believes South Africa should not view recent achievements as the highest level the national team can reach.
He argued that Bafana Bafana have previously achieved success and should continue pushing beyond their current standards.
“I always say that it’s important to leave the jersey at a better place,” Mosimane said.
“Yeah, there’s room, right? There’s room for improvement.”
The former Sundowns coach pointed to his own achievements at club level, saying success can be built upon by future leaders.
“I left Sundowns with the Champions League, did they have the second one?” he asked.
“Every stage and every level can be reached, can be improved.”
Coach Challenges Bafana To Break Historical Barriers
Mosimane said South African football has a history of competing at the highest level and should not treat past achievements as impossible targets.
He reminded fans that Bafana Bafana have previously qualified for World Cups and won the Africa Cup of Nations.
“It’s not the first time we qualify for World Cup, right? Carlos Perreira did it, right? It’s not the first time we won the AFCON. Clive Barker won it, right?” he said.
The coach added that reaching the later stages of major tournaments should become the next objective.
“So we can maybe talk about going into the next round of knockouts. Yes, that we can celebrate,” he said.
“But being in semi-finals, quarter-finals, have we done that? Let’s be honest, right? So that bar, it is high, but has been achieved before.”
Mosimane Says No Coach Is Indispensable
Mosimane also warned against the belief that one individual is solely responsible for success, saying South Africa has enough talent and experience to continue improving.
“I left Sundowns. I won the treble, and they’ve won the league how many times after I left?” he said.
“So really, we can all do it, right? So no one is really… indispensable.”
He insisted that the national team must continue raising expectations.
“Come on, we can do a little bit better, right?” Mosimane said.
Bafana Have Ability To Compete, Says Mosimane
The veteran coach concluded that South Africa has already shown it can compete against some of the continent’s strongest teams.
He highlighted previous victories and strong performances against top opponents as proof that bigger achievements are possible.
“We’ve beaten Morocco. We’re beating Nigeria. We’re beating Ghana,” Mosimane said.
