Cheslin Kolbe To Share Inspiring Life Story In New Memoir
Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe is preparing to give fans an intimate look into his remarkable journey after announcing the release of his memoir, Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds, later this year.
The book, which will be published globally in October by Pan Macmillan South Africa, traces Kolbe’s rise from humble beginnings in Kraaifontein to becoming one of the world’s most celebrated rugby players.

From Kraaifontein To The Top Of World Rugby
Kolbe’s memoir chronicles the milestones that shaped his career, from his early days with Western Province and the Stormers to successful spells with French clubs Toulouse and Toulon, his time in Japan and his achievements with the Springboks.
Beyond the rugby field, the book explores the role his family, community and Christian faith played in helping him overcome obstacles throughout his life.
‘I Refused To Let Challenges Defeat Me’
Kolbe said he hopes his story will encourage young people and anyone who has ever doubted their own potential.
“I grew up in a world of crime, drugs and violence, and was told I was too small to play rugby. I refused to let these challenges defeat me.”
The two-time Rugby World Cup winner said he wants readers to understand that difficult circumstances do not have to determine their future.
“I want this book to inspire young people, and anyone who has ever been told they are not enough, to defy the odds, believe in themselves and remember that their circumstances do not define their future.”
Announcing the memoir on Instagram, Kolbe echoed the same message, saying belief, hard work and resilience can help people achieve their dreams.
Award-Winning Journalist Joins The Project
The memoir was co-written with award-winning journalist and broadcaster David O’Sullivan, who previously collaborated with Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus on his memoir, Rassie: Stories of Life and Rugby.
O’Sullivan described working with Kolbe as an inspiring experience and said the book highlights the winger’s determination and resilience.
“This book shares his story of perseverance and courage – from growing up in Kraaifontein to reaching the greatest heights in world rugby as a double World Cup winner, and one of the most admired players of his generation.”
Celebrating A Glittering Career
Kolbe heads into the book’s release as one of South Africa’s most decorated rugby players.
In addition to winning back-to-back Rugby World Cups with the Springboks, he has lifted the European Champions Cup, claimed two French league titles and was named the 2024 SA Men’s Rugby Player of the Year.
Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds is scheduled to arrive in bookstores across South Africa and international markets in October 2026.
