Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has travelled to South Africa for a private visit.
His trip comes as Malawi continues helping citizens return from South Africa amid growing immigration tensions.
The presidency confirmed Mutharika’s departure from Kamuzu International Airport on Wednesday.
However, officials have not revealed the reason for his visit or his expected return date.
“The plane carrying the State President will depart Kamuzu International Airport this afternoon,” the brief statement said.
Mutharika travels amid Malawian repatriations
The President’s journey comes just weeks after increased numbers of Malawians returned home from South Africa.
Malawi has stepped up efforts to assist citizens leaving South Africa voluntarily.
The government has organised transport for nationals choosing to return home.
Meanwhile, authorities have encouraged Malawians in South Africa to remain calm.
