Pitso Mosimane is set to make his return as Bafana Bafana head coach for a second spell.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) approved his appointment during an Extraordinary Meeting on Saturday, 8 August 2026.
Mosimane will take over from Hugo Broos, who recently left his position as national team coach.
SAFA confirmed the decision after its National Executive Committee (NEC) considered the coaching appointment.
“The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach,” SAFA said.
Mosimane returns to Bafana Bafana
The appointment marks another chapter in Mosimane’s long coaching career.
He previously guided Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012 before pursuing club opportunities.
Mosimane later enjoyed major success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.
The 61-year-old now faces another major challenge with the national team.
South Africa will soon turn its attention towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Formal announcement expected next week
SAFA still needs to finalise several contractual matters before completing the appointment.
Consequently, officials expect to unveil Mosimane publicly next week.
SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan confirmed that the NEC had approved Mosimane’s return.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan following the NEC Extraordinary Meeting.
Mosimane will therefore begin preparing for his second stint with the national team.
His immediate task will involve building momentum ahead of South Africa’s upcoming competitive fixtures.
