What is an NIL Deal?

For those unfamiliar, “NIL” stands for Name, Image, and Likeness — a legal right allowing individuals to control how their personal brand is used commercially.

In the past, college athletes were barred from earning money off their fame. Signing to a college team meant forfeiting those rights. But about three years ago, NCAA rule changes and new state laws allowed college athletes to finally profit through sponsorships and endorsements.

Today, the rules around NIL deals depend on state laws and individual university policies. In some cases, athletes must undergo financial training before signing any deals, while others are restricted from promoting certain brands. Direct payments from schools are still prohibited, although in some states, booster clubs have found ways to support athletes more heavily under looser regulations.
