Sengezo Tshabangu has raised the possibility of recalling Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart.
The Citizens Coalition for Change senator made the remarks over a disputed waste-management project.
Tshabangu said Coltart could face recall if he continues disregarding a government directive.
The directive requires Bulawayo City Council to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Geo Pomona.
According to Tshabangu, the agreement could pave the way for a modern waste-management facility.
Tshabangu backs waste-management project
Tshabangu argued that Bulawayo needs a better solution to its waste disposal challenges.
He said a properly managed project could bring several benefits to the city.
These benefits include improved public health and stronger environmental standards.
Furthermore, Tshabangu said the project could create jobs and attract new investment.
He also linked the proposal to efforts aimed at modernising Bulawayo’s infrastructure.
“We should seriously consider the recall of Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart if he continues to disregard the Government’s directive for the Bulawayo City Council to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Geo Pomona, paving the way for a modern waste-management facility in the city.”
Political differences questioned
Tshabangu said political differences should not prevent development projects from moving forward.
He argued that the focus should remain on delivering tangible results for Bulawayo residents.
The senator also connected the waste-management project to Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 ambitions.
He said modern cities would support the country’s broader development objectives.
“A properly managed waste-management project would help Bulawayo address waste disposal challenges, improve public health and environmental standards, create employment, attract investment and modernise the city’s infrastructure.”
Tshabangu therefore believes the project could contribute to a cleaner and more productive Bulawayo.
However, his remarks also place political pressure on Coltart over the council’s position.
The potential recall adds another dimension to the disagreement surrounding the proposed Geo Pomona partnership.
For now, Tshabangu has framed the issue around development and service delivery.
“What matters is delivering tangible results for the people of Bulawayo and advancing Vision 2030.”
