Thomas Mapfumo Sued For US$50 000 By Former Blacks Unlimited Publicist
Legendary musician Thomas Mapfumo and his band manager Cuthbert Chiromo are facing a US$50 000 defamation lawsuit filed by former Blacks Unlimited publicist Blessing Vava.
The case stems from statements attributed to Mapfumo and Chiromo during media appearances, which Vava claims damaged his reputation and falsely portrayed him as someone who interfered in Mapfumo’s relationship with Kurai Makore.

Dispute Follows Media Interviews
According to court papers seen by The Herald, Vava’s claim relates to an 11 August 2026 H-Metro publication based on an interview with Mapfumo.
Vava alleges that Mapfumo identified him as someone who was influencing Makore against the musician.
His lawyers argue that the publication suggested Vava was improperly interfering in the relationship between Mapfumo and Makore.
The former publicist says the allegations were false and damaged his reputation.
More Allegations Made On Nehanda TV
The summons also refers to a separate podcast published by Nehanda TV and YouTube, where Vava alleges that similar claims were repeated.
According to the court papers, Chiromo allegedly went further by referring to Vava as a “witch” and making claims about his alleged involvement at the funeral of the late Lancelot Mapfumo.
Vava’s lawyers say Chiromo also allegedly accused him of controlling several social media accounts to turn Mapfumo against his supporters.
The summons states that the publications were made to third parties through H-Metro, Nehanda TV and YouTube.
Vava Denies Allegations
Vava’s legal team has rejected the claims, arguing that the statements portrayed their client as dishonest, untrustworthy and malicious.
The lawyers specifically dispute allegations that Vava is a thief, improperly manipulated Makore or Mapfumo, or operated secret social media accounts for the purposes alleged.
They also argue that the claims damaged Vava’s personal and professional reputation.
US$50 000 Compensation Sought
Vava is seeking US$50 000 in damages, with his lawyers pointing to what they describe as the seriousness of the allegations, particularly those suggesting theft and dishonesty.
The summons further states that Mapfumo and Chiromo did not retract the statements by 21 August 2026, which Vava’s lawyers say aggravated the alleged harm.
