Liverpool youngster Isaac Mabaya could make his Zimbabwe debut during the Warriors’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 21-year-old defender has earned a place in Ramón Catalá’s final squad for the opening qualifiers.
Zimbabwe will face Sierra Leone away on 24 September before welcoming DR Congo four days later.
Therefore, Mabaya could make his senior international debut during a crucial opening week.
Mabaya’s journey from Liverpool’s academy to Zimbabwe
Mabaya was born in Preston to Zimbabwean parents and entered Liverpool’s academy at six.
He quickly developed within one of England’s most respected youth systems.
Interestingly, the youngster did not start his career as a traditional defender.
Liverpool initially used him as a wide midfielder before moving him into a full-back role.
That switch allowed Mabaya to combine defensive duties with his attacking instincts.
He signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in 2021.
Since then, he has continued developing around the club’s senior setup.
Mabaya has also gained valuable experience alongside Liverpool’s first-team players during pre-season.
According to This Is Anfield, Liverpool registered him for both Premier League and Champions League squads.
He qualifies as both homegrown and club-trained.
Liverpool experience and England youth background
Mabaya has already tasted senior football with Liverpool despite his limited first-team opportunities.
He made his senior debut against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup in February 2025.
The youngster entered the match after Joe Gomez suffered an injury.
Now, his next senior appearance could come on the international stage.
Mabaya previously represented England across several youth levels.
His international record includes appearances for England Under-15, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-19 teams.
However, those appearances did not prevent him from choosing Zimbabwe at senior level.
His inclusion therefore gives Catalá another option at right-back.
Liverpool’s academy profile also highlights his ability to play at full-back.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will hope his Liverpool development translates into international football.
The Warriors face Sierra Leone on 24 September before playing DR Congo in Harare.
Mabaya is among the defenders selected for both qualifying fixtures.
