Fatal Mob Assault Comes Back To Haunt Families In Chief Makoni Community
Five families from Ngirazi Village under Chief Makoni have turned to a traditional community court seeking help over claims that an alleged avenging spirit is troubling people connected to the death of Leonard Tsikwaurere.
The case dates back to an alleged mob assault after Tsikwaurere was accused of stealing from an elderly woman.
Villagers Were Jailed Over Tsikwaurere’s Death
According to NewZimbabwe.com, Tsikwaurere was allegedly attacked by villagers after the accusation was made.
Headman Ngirazi told the community court that the assault ended with Tsikwaurere being taken away in a wheelbarrow and abandoned in a nearby thicket.
“The assailants later admitted that they loaded him into a wheelbarrow and dumped him in a nearby thicket while he was still alive. He was subsequently found dead.”
Four villagers were later arrested, convicted and each served six months in prison for the offence.
Families Seek Help Over Alleged Avenging Spirit
The Nyamubarwa, Nyagwaya, Karumekayi, Window and Jackson families have now approached Chief Makoni’s court.
They reportedly claim that people linked to the incident are being troubled by what is described in local traditional beliefs as an avenging spirit.
Headman Ngirazi said those affected allegedly include people who were never prosecuted.
“The deceased’s avenging spirit is reportedly troubling, not only those who were arrested, but also other individuals who participated in the assault and were never prosecuted.”
Chief Makoni referred the matter to a traditional healer for further consultation. The healer is expected to present findings to the community court within a week.
The families have denied claims that they attempted to suppress the alleged spirit.
The case has been postponed pending the healer’s recommendations.
