Layla Kolbe has publicly challenged President Cyril Ramaphosa over South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis.
The wife of Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe shared her frustration on Instagram Stories.
Her comments followed Ramaphosa’s appearance at an ANC Veterans League fundraising golf day.
The event took place at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead on Monday.
Ramaphosa had recently been booked off from public engagements because of ill health.
Meanwhile, the country faced growing anger over the deaths of women in Gauteng.
Police continue investigating several killings in Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas.
Ramaphosa told journalists that government needed to take stronger action against gender-based violence.
He also described GBV as a national crisis requiring a broader government response.
“Gender-based violence is not only a problem for women, but it’s also a national crisis, and we need to be treating it with exactly that. And we’re going to even be deploying more money, more resources, more technology to ensure that we deal with the fear that women are now subjected to,” he said.
However, Layla questioned why stronger action had not happened earlier.
She shared a screenshot of Ramaphosa attending the golf event.
“your ANC president is not sick for golf today.”
Layla then questioned the government’s long-standing approach to GBV.
“Every time its like we starting from scratch? Why have you not been prioritising this all along? We marched years ago and you promised the same! Now its just more this and more money and more money! Death penalty is the only answer, sorry to say,” she wrote.
Layla Kolbe Demands Action
Layla also questioned why Ramaphosa addressed the issue while attending the golf event.
“Also, he’s now soema better to speak today because its his golf day! His staff told him to say something before showing up for golf. Mxm. Its not about the ANC anymore people! They dont give a damn about your loyalty! They safe with their many bodyguards and lavish lives while they hand out blankets for loyalty! Come on! South Africa deserves better,” she wrote.
She continued by demanding stronger action to protect women.
“So how’s government going to act? After women are dead? Why arent you acting for all the years in power??????? We need change! We need action! We needed protection from Day 1,” she continued.
Layla also challenged the argument that government cannot prevent violence inside private homes.
“He says even if GBV happens in the privacy of peoples homes. No cupcake, she went for a run!!!!! She went to the post-office! We dont expect you to protect us in the privacy of our homes. We expect better law enforcement 
yoh. Dont say plain and simple. You are doing nothing yet you say its ‘plain and simple’. You know what is plain and simple? Better and stricter laws. Death penalty. Plain and simple!!!!!!!,” she wrote.
Her comments come amid intense public concern following the deaths of women in Ekurhuleni.
Ramaphosa has said government will deploy additional money, resources and technology.
Police have also arrested three suspects linked to the murder of one of the victims.
The Presidency previously said Ramaphosa could not attend a September 17 memorial dialogue because of ill health.
