Zimbabwean forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continues to make headlines in the South African Premier Soccer League.
The AmaZulu striker scored again against Polokwane City on Saturday. His goal secured a 1-0 victory and extended an extraordinary scoring streak.
Ngwenya has now scored in seven straight Betway Premiership matches. Even more impressively, he has found the net in every league game this season.
At just 23, the Zimbabwean has quickly become one of AmaZulu’s biggest attacking threats.
Ngwenya matches rare PSL scoring record
Ngwenya’s incredible run has now placed him alongside two former PSL players. According to OptaJabu, only Grant Young and Esau Kanyenda previously achieved the feat.
Young scored in seven consecutive league matches for Hellenic in 1999. Kanyenda later matched that achievement with Jomo Cosmos in 2002. Now, more than 20 years later, Ngwenya has joined the exclusive group.
However, the AmaZulu star could soon leave both players behind. Another goal in his next league appearance would take his streak to eight games. That would give Ngwenya the longest scoring run in PSL league history.
Zimbabwean forward chasing history
Ngwenya has already scored eight league goals this season. His tally is higher than his seven-game scoring streak because he scored twice in one match. The forward has therefore scored in every league appearance for AmaZulu.
His latest effort against Polokwane City also carried huge importance. It proved enough to give AmaZulu another valuable three points. Ngwenya is currently with the Zimbabwe national team in Morocco.
His attention will eventually return to AmaZulu and the league record within reach. One more goal could therefore turn an impressive streak into a piece of PSL history.
For now, Ngwenya has matched a record that has survived since 2002. The next league appearance could give the Zimbabwean striker a record of his own.
