Walter Mzembi Reportedly Left Struggling After Wife Allegedly Sold Properties Worth Millions
Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has responded to reports that properties linked to him and his wife, Barbra Hernandez, were sold for more than US$2 million while he was living outside Zimbabwe.
Mzembi, who reportedly has been staying at his nephew Amiel Matindike’s Harare home, appeared to dismiss the reports while suggesting that the value of the properties involved could have been considerably higher than the figure being circulated.

Mzembi Questions US$2 Million Figure
According to TellZim News, claims surrounding Mzembi’s financial situation emerged from allegations that Hernandez disposed of several properties and subsequently left, leaving the former minister with little of his previous property portfolio.
Asked about the reported US$2 million value, Mzembi responded sarcastically, questioning whether the figure accurately reflected the value of the properties allegedly sold.
“US$2 million yoga here? (Just US$2million)?” he asked.
Mzembi also appeared to acknowledge the possibility that he had suffered financial losses, but maintained that his ability to rebuild had not been taken away.
“Haa makuhwa ayo asi chero vakatora kuti vakatora nenjere here? (These are just mere rumours; but even if it’s true, did they take all brick and mortar and my brains?” he said.
Former Minister Says He Still Has Assets
Mzembi was also questioned about how Hernandez could have disposed of properties allegedly co-owned by the couple.
Rather than directly confirming the reported sales, he challenged the premise of the question and said there had been no complaint from him about his wife disposing of properties she owned.
“Is anyone complaining that she sold her own properties? Haven’t I complained as a co-owner, as you say? There is nothing I have confirmed here; I am simply saying is there a complaint that she sold her own properties. I have my own stock of assets, and I have not complained to anyone, so who is more bereaved?” he said.
Living At Nephew’s Harare Home
The reports about Mzembi’s finances come against the backdrop of his years outside Zimbabwe following the fall of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.
Mzembi left the country alongside other figures associated with the Generation 40 faction, including former minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
He returned to Zimbabwe in June 2025 amid reports that he wanted to rejoin the ruling party, but was arrested shortly after his arrival.
The former minister was charged with criminal abuse of office over allegations that he had unlawfully donated public viewing television screens to churches during his time in government.
He spent close to a year in custody before being acquitted on May 13, 2026.
