More Than 4 Million Harare Traffic Offences Caught On Camera As Authorities Start Chasing Motorists
More than four million traffic offences have now been captured by Harare’s new AI-powered traffic camera system, with authorities beginning to contact motorists as enforcement gathers pace.
The figure has risen sharply from about 2.3 million offences recorded in mid-August 2026, according to figures released by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
Harare Traffic Cameras Catch Millions Of Offences
The system has been recording violations at strategic intersections across the capital. These include ignoring red traffic lights, driving against the flow of traffic, speeding, using mobile phones while driving and failing to wear seatbelts.
Illegal passenger loading and dropping off passengers in the middle of roads have also been detected.
Nyathi said authorities were now working on the process for collecting fines.
“Over four million violators have been detected by the cameras to date and some of the violations include driving through red traffic lights, driving towards oncoming vehicles and picking up and dropping off passengers in the middle of the road.”
Authorities Begin Contacting Motorists
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ambassador Raphael Faranisi said some motorists had already been contacted.
“The system is set to be commissioned by President Mnangagwa soon. However, authorities have started contacting some of the offenders for fining,” Faranisi said.
Authorities are verifying recorded offences before penalties are imposed.
A CBZ Bank account has also been opened for fine payments, while an electronic payment platform is being finalised.
More Cameras Planned For Harare
The first phase of the Smart Traffic Management and Surveillance Programme involves the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage and TelOne.
Twenty cameras have so far been installed, with plans for more than 300 cameras across Harare before the system is expanded to other cities.
The technology is also intended to provide real-time traffic information and help authorities identify congestion and incidents.
