Chitungwiza Man Arrested After Woman Dies During Throat Surgery

A 51-year-old woman died while undergoing a surgery procedure to remove a growth from her throat at a house in Chitungwiza, resulting in the arrest of a 40-year-old man.

Douglas Mutore was arrested in connection with the death of Magret Gwamura following the incident in Unit D, Seke, on 24 September 2026.

Procedure Turns Fatal

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Mutore allegedly carried out the procedure at the house using a surgical blade.

Gwamura reportedly died while the procedure was underway.

Mutore allegedly fled from the property after her death.

Police later attended the scene as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death began.

Police Recover Surgical Equipment

Officers recovered several items from the scene, including surgical instruments, blood-stained bandages and used medication.

The discoveries formed part of the evidence gathered as police investigated the alleged procedure and the circumstances that led to Gwamura’s death.

Police also established that Mutore was not in possession of practising certificates when he was arrested.

Police Warn Public

Following the incident, the ZRP urged members of the public to check the credentials of people offering medical services before seeking treatment.

Police also advised people to obtain medical treatment from registered medical practitioners and recognised health institutions.

Public Raises Concerns Over Home Medical Procedures

The incident has sparked concern among members of the public, with many questioning why a potentially dangerous throat procedure was carried out at a residential property instead of a recognised medical facility. Some raised concerns about people seeking treatment from unregistered practitioners, while others called for greater awareness about the risks of relying on individuals without proper medical credentials.
