‘He was a corrupt tenderpreneur’: Fadzayi Mahere on Wicknell Chivayo

Fadzayi Mahere has described Wicknell Chivayo as a “corrupt tenderpreneur” rather than a genuine businessman.

Mahere made the remarks while challenging narratives surrounding Chivayo’s wealth and business success.

She argued that Chivayo’s rise was closely connected to government tenders and public contracts.

“People are spreading a false narrative that Wicknell was a bona fide businessman. He was not. He was a corrupt tenderpreneur,” Mahere said.

She also questioned Intratek’s business model and its role in major government projects.

Mahere pointed to Chivayo’s appearance before Parliament during scrutiny of the Gwanda solar project.

In 2018, Chivayo faced questions from MPs over a US$5 million payment to Intratek.

The payment covered pre-commencement work for the planned 100MW Gwanda solar project.

Mahere claimed Intratek functioned mainly by securing tenders and involving international companies in project delivery.

She further alleged that the company added substantial mark-ups before receiving payments from government.

However, Chivayo and Intratek have denied wrongdoing in the Gwanda dispute.

The courts ultimately acquitted Chivayo and Intratek of fraud charges linked to the project.

Mahere also criticised Chivayo’s highly publicised luxury lifestyle and financial gifts.

She argued that public funds should instead support hospitals, schools and infrastructure.

“Please don’t be surprised that the public are so opposed to what he represents,” Mahere said.

Her comments come amid renewed public debate about Chivayo’s government contracts and wealth.

The Gwanda project remains particularly controversial after years of delays.

ZPC and Intratek were still discussing the project’s revival in 2024, according to Parliament.

Mahere concluded by calling for new leadership and greater accountability over public resources.
