Kaizer Chiefs could face another selection headache after Luke Baartman picked up an injury on international duty.
The young attacker featured for South Africa’s U23 team against Algeria. However, he suffered a thigh problem during the encounter.
Baartman has become an important figure for Chiefs this season. The versatile attacker has featured in all seven Betway Premiership matches.
His potential absence could therefore leave Nasreddine Nabi with another attacking concern. Chiefs have already dealt with several injury problems this campaign.
Luke Baartman injury adds to Chiefs concerns
Baartman’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for the Soweto giants. Chiefs are already waiting for several players to complete their recoveries.
Flavio da Silva has returned to training after spending time on the sidelines. Khanyisa Mayo has also made progress following his hernia operation.
Meanwhile, Langelihle Phili continues working towards a return to competitive action. The 21-year-old winger suffered a serious ankle injury.
Phili could potentially return for Chiefs’ home clash against Stellenbosch. That fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13.
Therefore, Chiefs could soon welcome several attacking options back into their squad. However, Baartman’s latest setback could complicate those plans.

Steven Mendes continues to attract attention
While Chiefs manage their injury situation, another youngster is making headlines.
Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo has praised Steven Mendes after his impressive performances.
The 18-year-old recently claimed the Golden Boot at the COSAFA U20 tournament. The competition took place in Maputo, Mozambique.
Mendes normally operates as a midfielder. However, South Africa deployed him as a striker during the tournament.
The tactical change produced impressive results for the teenager. He also earned the nickname ‘Stevie G’ from some teammates.
Khumalo believes Mendes already shows the maturity and ability required at senior level. His performances could therefore strengthen his case for a first-team opportunity.
Furthermore, local reports claim MLS club Chicago Fire are monitoring the talented teenager.
For now, Chiefs must wait for more clarity regarding Baartman’s thigh injury. His availability could prove important as the league campaign continues.
