Keletso Sifama has opened up about a difficult chapter that shaped his football journey.
The attacker broke into Kaizer Chiefs as a teenager and made his professional debut aged 17.
However, his promising start soon became difficult for reasons beyond football.
Sifama has now revealed that epilepsy affected him during some of the most important years of his career.
Sifama Opens Up About His Epilepsy Battle
The Katlehong-born footballer experienced epileptic seizures while playing for several clubs.
Some episodes even happened during matches, making his football journey particularly challenging.
Sifama explained that the condition affected him while representing Kaizer Chiefs and Pretoria Callies.
He also experienced seizures while representing the national team.
“It wasn’t an easy journey for me because I had challenges throughout my career,” Sifama told Soccer Laduma’s Tshepang Mailwane. “It wasn’t great, but I think one day it will be a great career. I had so many challenges.
“I was a sick boy. I had seizures, like epilepsy. It played a role in my career. It killed me, but not me being weak in my mind. I kept on pushing and fighting this thing of me getting sick.
“I used to have epileptic (episodes) even in the games, but it’s a thing that healed as I got older. It happened at Chiefs, and at Pretoria Callies. Even in the national team it happened.
Treatment eventually helped Sifama manage the condition as he grew older.
He now says the seizures are no longer part of his life.
Despite those setbacks, the forward refused to allow his health struggles to define his football career.
After leaving Kaizer Chiefs, Sifama spent time with several clubs as he searched for consistency.
The Soweto club loaned him to Maritzburg United, Pretoria Callies and Casric Stars.
He later joined Cape Town Spurs on a permanent basis.
However, his spell with Spurs did not produce the career turnaround he wanted.
Sifama Targets A Fresh Start
Sifama has since found another opportunity with Gomora United in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The 23-year-old believes the move could help him rebuild his career.
More importantly, he remains determined to prove that he can compete at the highest level.
“I don’t want to blame it on me being sick. I think it was a decision they took for me to leave Kaizer Chiefs, but I did not take it badly. I am still in the professional set-up. I can go back if I work hard. I can’t blame it on me being sick,” he said.
Sifama believes hard work can eventually take him back into the top flight.
He also credits faith for helping him overcome difficult moments throughout his journey.
“Faith and belief keep me going. In everything that you do, do not forget to pray. Everything will happen in the way it should if you believe.
His latest chapter at Gomora therefore represents more than another club move.
It gives Sifama another chance to regain momentum and rebuild his reputation.
For now, he wants to focus on working hard and showing his ability on the pitch.
His journey also highlights the challenges athletes can face away from the spotlight.
Nevertheless, Sifama continues to believe that better days remain ahead.
