Angeline Murimirwa, CEO of CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education), has been awarded the esteemed Africa Education Medal 2024. This prestigious accolade recognizes individuals transforming education across Africa, celebrating their impactful stories and leadership. Founded by T4 Education and HP Inc., the medal honors Murimirwa’s tireless efforts in advancing girls’ education and women’s leadership.
Under Murimirwa’s leadership, CAMFED has implemented a proven model enabling marginalized girls to access secondary education and thrive. This model focuses on engaging school communities, facilitating transitions to work or entrepreneurship, and partnering with governments to embed effective practices in national education systems. CAMFED operates in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, and Ghana, collaborating with over 7,000 partner schools in underserved rural communities.
Murimirwa’s dedication to education equity has yielded significant results. In Zimbabwe, girls supported by CAMFED are nearly three times less likely to drop out of school compared to their peers. In Tanzania, literacy gains for these girls are twice as high as those in non-partner schools. As a founding member and first elected Chair of the CAMFED Association, Murimirwa has also mobilized a pan-African network of 279,000 women leaders committed to securing every girl’s right to quality education.
Murimirwa was selected from a competitive pool of finalists, including leaders from various educational initiatives across Africa. She will receive a platform at the World Schools Summit in Dubai on November 23-24, where she will nominate a school for T4 Education’s Best School to Work programme. This recognition underscores Murimirwa’s vital work in breaking down barriers to girls’ education, inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.
