Zimbabwe Motorists Face 14-Day Deadline Over Traffic Camera Offences

Motorists caught violating traffic regulations by Zimbabwe’s Electronic Traffic Management System will have 14 days to respond to notifications and pay applicable fines before risking blacklisting and prosecution.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says offenders will receive electronic notifications, with the first seven days allocated for responding to the recorded offences and a further seven days provided for payment.

Failure To Respond Could Lead To Prosecution

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that motorists who fail to comply within the stipulated period risk being blacklisted and placed on a police wanted list for prosecution.

He said motorists would have access to video evidence captured by the traffic cameras, allowing them to review the recorded incidents before deciding how to proceed.

“Every motorist found on the wrong side of the law will be given the opportunity to view the recorded video and will have the choice of paying the fine or appearing in court,” Nyathi said.

The penalties imposed will depend on the offences committed and the applicable legal provisions. Serious violations could result in driving bans or the cancellation of driving licences.

Traffic Camera Network Set To Expand

The electronic traffic enforcement system is currently operational at 20 sites, but police expect coverage to increase as the programme expands to other parts of the country.

Bulawayo is being considered as a possible next location for the rollout.

The ZRP also plans to conduct public awareness campaigns nationwide to explain how the system operates and educate motorists, pedestrians and motorcyclists about their responsibilities under traffic regulations.

Police have urged all road users to comply with traffic laws, warning that the use of cameras will make it increasingly difficult for offenders to evade detection.
