Highlanders and Dynamos could receive financial support from state-owned companies under a proposal by Nkulumane MP Freedom Murechu.
The ZANU PF legislator wants government institutions to step in and support Zimbabwe’s two football giants. He believes stronger financial backing would protect the clubs’ futures.
Speaking during Friday’s Pre-Budget Seminar in Bulawayo, Murechu outlined his proposal. He suggested ZINARA should sponsor Highlanders, while NetOne could support Dynamos.
“I realise that corporates fund most football teams in the country save for two very important teams – Dynamos and Highlanders,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the clubs’ ability to remain competitive. According to Murechu, financial difficulties could eventually threaten their Premier Soccer League status.
“If we’re not careful, sooner rather than later, Highlanders and Dynamos could be relegated. As a country, we cannot afford to see these two teams relegated.”
Murechu wants government companies to support the football giants
Murechu believes institutional sponsorship could provide the clubs with greater financial security. He wants the government to consider sustainable partnerships rather than temporary assistance.
“My recommendation is that these two teams can be sponsored by government entities. For instance, Highlanders can be sponsored by ZINARA and Dynamos sponsored by NetOne,” he said.
He further argued that both clubs carry significance beyond their performances on the football pitch.
“These two teams do not represent just football, but they are a culture on their own. We cannot afford a situation whereby these teams survive at the mercy of individuals.”
Why Highlanders and Dynamos need stronger financial backing
The proposal comes amid growing financial pressures across Zimbabwean football. Clubs must meet increasing expenses to remain competitive throughout the season.
These include players’ salaries, travelling costs, accommodation and other competition-related expenses.
However, Highlanders and Dynamos occupy a special position in Zimbabwe’s football history. Both clubs enjoy massive nationwide support and have influenced generations of football supporters.
Their ownership structures also differ significantly. Dynamos is majority-owned by Bernard Marriot-Lusengo, while Highlanders operates as a community social club.
Murechu’s proposal therefore raises an important question about the future of Zimbabwe’s biggest football institutions. Could government-backed sponsorship provide the stability both clubs need?
